Work as part of a friendly, thoughtful team obsessed with accurate, clear, and precise language.
Copy edit and proofread reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, news stories, op-eds, and other content published by Pew in print and online, in accordance with the organization's quality standards and style guidelines.
Help maintain the Pew style guide and answer staff style and grammar queries.
Responsibilities
Copy edit and proofread Pew-produced content for both print and web in the most timely and effective manner, while adhering to Pew/AP style and meeting the highest editorial standards.
Coordinate with relevant editorial, digital, and production staff as needed.
Maintain a general knowledge of issues related to Pew projects and campaigns to help ensure the highest level of editorial accuracy.
Perform other duties as assigned, which may include occasional writing, editorial support, and/or content editing.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required, with a major in journalism, English, or a related subject preferred.
Generally four years of progressively responsible editing experience with an agency, news outlet, journal, corporation, or large nonprofit institution.
Solid proofreading skills. Familiarity with the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, as well as basic search engine optimization practices.
Top-notch organizational skills, with an ability to juggle multiple tasks, manage time effectively, analyze and solve production problems, work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, and meet tight deadlines.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including an ease in expressing complex concepts and issues in a clear, effective manner for general audiences and policy experts alike.
Strong commitment to accuracy and keen attention to detail.
Familiarity with and working knowledge of basic office software, including Microsoft Office, as well as industry-standard software, such as Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of Workfront project management software and EndNote citation management software is a plus.
