The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking a Data Editor to lead our dynamic data reporting team, conceive and edit data enterprise and projects, guide data-driven collaborations across the newsroom and drive newsroom development of data products and reporting tools.
We’re seeking an editor who is passionate about ambitious enterprise journalism that proves its claims, and nimble enough to make data journalism part of our breaking news coverage where appropriate. Extensive experience working with data is a must: highly-qualified applicants will be adept at acquiring, cleaning, and analyzing data, and at coaching others on how to do the same.
We’re also looking for an editor who recognizes that data is often not enough, and has the experience and collaborative skills needed to guide and edit a complete story.
A commitment to innovation and experimentation is a core requirement. We value creative storytelling, and we’re seeking an editor who’s just as adept at editing interactives as narratives. Beyond individual stories, the Data Editor will also identify opportunities and lead development of data-powered-resources for both newsroom colleagues and our audiences.
What you’ll do
Conceive, lead and edit data-driven stories.
Manage a three-member team of data reporters and developers and support their professional development.
Collaborate with a wide array of reporters and editors and support the development of data literacy and expertise across the newsroom.
With support from our Product, Engineering, and Data and Insights teams, create evergreen data resources for our audiences, and guide development of internal newsroom tools that improve our reporting.
What we’re looking for
Strong data analysis skills — a clear grasp of how to manipulate data and draw conclusions from it. Experience acquiring data with scraping methods. And a proven ability to guide and coach others in these skills.
Competency with coding languages such as R or Python. Familiarity with front-end development (React, CSS, Javascript) is preferred but not required.
A strong sense for visual storytelling and a demonstrated ability to develop presentations that break out of traditional story formats.
Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
Agility in integrating data journalism into breaking news coverage.
A keen interest in collaboration — a true team player.
Past experience with in-depth enterprise journalism.
