News Enterprise Editor

New Posted 26 February 2024 | San Francisco, CA | The San Francisco Standard

The San Francisco Standard is seeking an experienced editor to join our in-person digital newsroom. As News Enterprise Editor, you will work closely with reporters, visual journalists and other editors to guide news coverage, ensuring delivery of high-quality reporting to large audiences.

We're looking for a versatile team player who can lead a group of four to six reporters on coverage including court proceedings and criminal justice investigations, corruption and malfeasance cases, data-driven features and more, focused both on San Francisco and at the state level. This team regularly produces journalism that inspires policy changes and other significant results.

You will be adept at bringing stories from the kernel of an idea to publication, shaping narratives and helping structure stories for maximum real-world impact. You will help guide reporters to publish on a regular cadence, striking the proper balance between allowing sufficient reporting time and not letting projects drag out needlessly. You will have confidence in guiding investigative reporting and data-driven analysis.

This role requires excellent news judgment and a keen sense of what resonates with readers.

Responsibilities:

Motivate and lead newsroom staff to produce compelling, innovative, impactful journalism
Assign and edit stories
Enforce and uphold editorial standards for accuracy, ethics and style
Mentor and develop reporters to improve their writing and reporting skills
Identify opportunities to build in-house tools and adopt off-the-shelf technology to deepen and expedite reporting
Track major news stories and events. Adjust assignments and coverage plans accordingly, identifying compelling and original angles and coverage opportunities and using data to drive decision-making
Work closely with other editors on planning and coordinating news coverage

Requirements:

5+ years experience as a news editor or in a similar management role in a newsroom.
Extensive knowledge of editorial processes, fact-checking, and journalism ethics.
Knowledge of media law and AP Style.
Leadership and team management abilities, including skills to improve staff performance.
Excellent news judgment and ability to prioritize stories and make quick decisions.
Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with digital content management systems and social media.
Data journalism and basic data visualization skills a plus.
Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field preferred.

This role may require evening or weekend work. We are an in-person newsroom; this is not a remote role.

To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter and at least five work samples, including at least three examples of impressive work that you have edited. Provide an explanation of the role you played in guiding these works to publication, challenges you and your team overcame and any real-world impact the journalism had.

The pay range for this role is $110,000 to $170,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate. We encourage you to apply even if you don’t fit the preferred qualifications of the job.
