The Savannah Morning News/savannahnow.com part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a senior editor to join our team. This editor will have a focus on politics and will help lead our local team of reporters as well as our statehouse reporting fellow.
This role will execute our politics plan for the upcoming presidential election, along with coverage of local and state races. Georgia has become a political epicenter in recent years and is expected to be one of several key states to decide the 2024 election. This editor should be skilled at helping reporters remain dogged in the quest for ambitious solutions-journalism and constantly look beyond data to humanize the most pressing issues facing our readers.
This editor is expected to use digital analytics to help guide our reporting staff and should be comfortable analyzing story performance, identifying audiences and strategizing on how best to grow our readership. It is important we tell stories with short and long-form content that resonates and helps us grow our digital audience. Skill and versatility as an editor is needed to shape everything from breaking news briefs to Big-J journalism.
Candidates must have the skill to help reporters bring complex topics to the living rooms of families across all demographics and across multiple mediums. This includes social media platforms, email newsletters and podcasts.
Requirements:
Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 2 or more years as a newsroom leader or senior reporter.
A strong commitment to defending the values of the First Amendment.
Commitment to and skill in producing exclusive, high-impact journalism.
Outstanding journalism ethics.
A proven aptitude for storytelling using a broad range of media, including the written word, video, photography, and podcast.
Collaborates well with others and can work within a team environment.
Work weekends and nights when there is major breaking news.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check and a motor vehicle record check & drug screen (for driving roles only).
