The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is seeking a business reporter to report on Amazon, Microsoft and other Big Tech employers in the Seattle area. The reporter will cover these companies as employers, political players and influencers of economic dynamics in the region, while examining how their actions and products shape life in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

This is a high-profile, competitive beat that will reward reporters interested in breaking news and going big on some of the world’s most consequential companies. The successful candidate brings an innate desire to make rich, insightful business coverage accessible and interesting to readers who may not see themselves as business-news fans. They will join a team of eight committed to telling compelling business stories for our region.

Responsibilities

Pitch and cover news of Amazon and Microsoft, as well as other Big Tech companies active in the region.
Cover the news as it happens, while developing scoops and producing enterprise stories.
Explore changes to the workplace cultures and policies, and to the physical footprint of Amazon and Microsoft in Seattle and the region.
Examine the impact of regulatory actions and changes, and the push into artificial intelligence.
Be inclusive in coverage, developing a range of sources and story ideas that fairly represent the rich cultural diversity of our region.
Collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom, supporting other newsroom teams as needed.
Work with digital producers, photographers and designers to coordinate visual journalism and online stories.

Experience: Professional experience working as a reporter for a news organization.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or relevant equivalent experience.
Familiarity with digital news production, social media and analytics.
Be able to analyze facts and data and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness and fairness under pressure and on deadline. 
A record of untangling complex topics and presenting them in engaging writing.
Be able to write clearly, accurately and creatively and meet deadlines.
Be well-acquainted with inclusive journalism practices.
Must understand and uphold the standards, ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times, regardless of platform.

This is a hybrid position based in Seattle requiring regular in-office work, as well as occasional night and weekend work.

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $61,200 to $102,600. We typically pay between $61,200 to $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
