Data Journalist

New Posted 4 September 2023 | Victoria, England, United Kingdom | The Telegraph

We are looking for an experienced Data Journalist to join The Telegraph.

Working across the newsroom, you will use data to uncover exclusive stories, generate insightful analysis and create innovative visuals and interactives. You will work with a variety of desks, editors and correspondents, understanding their editorial priorities and helping them use data to inform our readers. You will play a leading role in exciting new areas of growth for the Telegraph and help to develop new tools for our readers to understand their finances, health and education.

You will pitch, research and write your own data pieces, from breaking news stories to features. You will also explore opportunities for new storytelling formats, from trackers to scrollers. You will explain statistics and datasets to our readers, and use statistical and data science methods to identify trends and patterns.

The position requires a highly organised, self-starting individual who has both the sharp editorial sense of a seasoned reporter, as well as the deep passion for statistics of a data scientist. You should ideally have strong copywriting, data analysis and programming skills – but moreover you should possess a willingness to learn new techniques to expand the kinds of stories you can tell.

Key Responsibilities:

Delivering innovative data-led or interactive-led journalism
Collaborating closely with editors and desks to understand priorities and develop ideas
Identifying and analysing key datasets to generate exclusives
Developing bespoke tools, calculators and lookups that give readers a personalised view on the news
Identifying opportunities for evergreen pieces such as trackers that offer readers’ insight any time of year
Working with graphics and designs teams to create cutting-edge visuals, interactives and user experiences

Key Skills

A proven track record of telling stories with data or interactives in a compelling way
Data analysis and visualisation skills, ideally based in a programming language such as Python or R
Experience working with web-based technologies such as Javascript, HTML, and CSS
An ability to write clear and accurate copy, particularly with regards to explaining financial or statistical concepts
An understanding of modern development practices, including the use of version control systems such as Git
Experience working with backend systems, including the use of cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platforms
