The Telegraph’s home news team has an exciting opportunity for an experienced reporter to move into the consumer affairs editor role.

This is a key specialism within the team, covering some of the most high-profile topics on the news agenda - from the cost of living crisis to the epidemic of scams. The consumer affairs editor is also expected to bring in the kind of stories that get everyone talking - such as Tesco no longer selling cornflour or the National Trust dropping ‘Easter’ from its annual egg hunt.

You will be expected to source exclusives which can lead the website and splash the newspaper, conduct investigations, and write analysis, features and long reads to ensure that The Telegraph’s consumer affairs coverage is comprehensive, and of the highest standard.

Key responsibilities

The consumer affairs editor is expected to bring in exclusive, agenda setting news stories.
They should be confident in writing front page stories and articles which lead the website.
The consumer affairs editor needs to plan for and produce stories for key diary stories on their patch.
They should be able to spot trends and identify sector developments before they are widely reported.
The successful candidate will be expected to liaise with the newsdesk to plan exclusive stories and investigations, which will support The Telegraph’s subscription goals.
They will have to work to tight deadlines to identify and effectively communicate the strongest news lines of potential stories.
They must be flexible in organising their schedule around the deadline demands of the newsroom.
The successful candidate should maintain a strong awareness across the broader news agenda, with ideas on how to take stories on and generally how to improve the quality of The Telegraph’s consumer affairs coverage.
They must ensure stories are accurate and legally compliant.
They will be expected to build and maintain a strong network of relevant contacts.
The consumer affairs editor should develop an understanding of the stories which attract readers online, and that readers and subscribers to The Telegraph are interested in. Through your articles, you will help the company to reach its goal of attracting and retaining more subscribers online.
