The Times-Picayune is seeking a reporter to join a new statewide education team who will focus on New Orleans’ higher education and K-12 school systems.
The Crescent City is home to several colleges and universities, including Tulane University, three HBCUs, a major public research university and the Jesuit-run Loyola University. Tulane alone is one of the region’s largest private employers, a critical driver of economic development and a major center of research, medical training and legal scholarship.
At the same time, New Orleans is on the front line of the charter movement in public education. Its public school system is an all-charter network, and tracing the progress of this nearly two-decade-long experiment in how the city’s children are educated is of critical important to the region’s future.
We’re looking for a thoughtful writer who knows how to penetrate institutions and school systems via sourcing and public records. Whoever takes the job will need to be comfortable balancing breaking news with enterprise, because our view is that important investigations and illuminating projects come from great beat reporting.
Our New Orleans newsroom is locally owned and growing, and we’re part of a media company that aims to be the pre-eminent source of quality journalism across Louisiana and the Gulf South. The creation of this statewide education team is key to that ambition.
The Times-Picayune is an equal employment opportunity employer, committed to recruiting, developing, and promoting a diverse workforce while providing unique opportunities and career paths for our employees. We encourage applicants of all backgrounds and experience levels to apply.
