The Wall Street Journal is looking for a deputy coverage chief in the Washington bureau who will be responsible for ensuring that all of our news coverage meets the highest standards of Wall Street Journal reporting and editing.

The editor will work hand-in-hand with the Washington coverage chief to set the tone for all the Wall Street Journal’s work in the region. The Journal has a storied tradition of excellence in Washington, and to succeed in this role you’ll need to carry on those ambitions and adapt them creatively for our changing audiences in a digital world. The deputy will work with the coverage chief to think innovatively about new formats and new approaches—especially around the 2024 presidential election.

The position will report to the Washington coverage chief. Considerable editing and management experience is required.

You will:

Help develop and implement a strategy for the bureau that will establish the Journal as the news leader for American politics, policy, national security, defense and economics.

Oversee the daily news flow and execute wide-aperture coverage of the presidential campaign and election.

Manage coverage of Congress, the administration and its vast portfolio of policy—foreign relations, defense, trade, the economy, the environment, immigration and much more.

Build and maintain a top-flight team of reporters and editors.

Seek new ways of doing our journalism digitally, and champion them in the newsroom.

You have:

Several years experience managing reporters

Demonstrated success at managing news coverage and managing longer-term work.

Ability to handle complex and sensitive coverage.

The very highest standards of excellence, and a commitment to ambitious and distinctive journalism.
