Pitches Wanted (Gear, Gadgets) | $1 per word

New Posted 30 November 2022 | Remote | The Wall Street Journal

Daniel Varghese, Gear and Gadgets Editor at The Wall Street Journal, is looking for pitches: I am looking to assign a bunch of stories for Gear and Gadget print slots I have in the next few months. Our rate is $1 per word. Some context on what I’m looking for are below. Our section is (mostly) not a space for straightforward reviews or pieces pegged to specific news events. Broadly, we want to offer a unique perspective on emerging product categories or highlight novelties in existing ones.
Two recent illustrative examples:
- Brigid Mander on people ditching their cars for e-bikes
- Sal Vaglica on over-designed and extremely pricey coolers: https://www.wsj.com/articles/e-bike-review-can-you-actually-ditch-your-car-for-an-e-bike-11663702735

We also regularly publish stories in a few rubrics. One worth pitching to is “That’s Debatable,” where one neutrally presents two sides of a buzzy argument. See Chris Castano on Grammarly and Janine Annett on smart bathroom scales: https://www.wsj.com/articles/can-grammarly-make-you-better-writer-11656431727 Finally, Off Duty isn’t an e-commerce vertical (no deal posts!) but I still love market roundups, provided they have a strong hook. See Bijan Stephen’s list of non-played out board games and Sami Reiss’s $10,000 shopping trip: https://www.wsj.com/articles/best-new-board-games-review-11663710554 If any of this sparks something within you, please shoot me an email. I’m daniel.varghese@wsj.com. And if you already have one out to me, please do not hesitate to bump it for a response. I’ll try to give you one asap. No deadline.
