The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Senior Photo Editor for WSJ. Magazine & Style.
We are looking for a photo editor with both a stylish sensibility and journalistic integrity who brings a robust background in fashion, style and lifestyle photo production to an award-winning team. You must also have a deadline-driven metabolism and be able to work quickly and meticulously on a range of projects, collaborating with the photo director, story editors and art directors to execute complex shoots across a range of subject matter relevant to style, culture, fashion and lifestyle. You should have experience with talent-based cover and feature magazine shoots, contemporary portraiture, reportage and conceptual still-life as well as deep, thoughtful research skills.
You will:
Commission and produce visual assets for WSJ. Magazine and Style for the needs of both the long-lead print magazine and digital.
Flawlessly manage and hit production and post-production deadlines, balancing fast-paced urgent work with longer-lead, large-scale projects. Create, update and communicate timelines, budgets, shoot requirements, vendor needs and production timetables with all third-party collaborators and internal teams.
Supervise post-production process for selection and delivery in a timely and organized fashion.
Pitch visually innovative and original new approaches to coverage, demonstrating deep and up-to-date understanding of the best photographers, stylists, hair/makeup artists, set-designers, etc. currently working, and expanding on WSJ.’s strong network of trusted collaborators.
Have, maintain and build on excellent working relationships with agents, photographers and creative collaborators.
Think in fresh, catchy and witty ways about how to best visually represent columns and conceptual stories across platforms.
Meticulously maintain a budget on a regular basis under direction of the Photo Director and Managing Editors. Professionally represent Journal interests and negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third-parties.
Attend and manage on-set production as required.
You have:
At least 4 to 7 years experience in a photo editing & production role.
A background in editorial production work, conceptualization and assigning visual content.
Excellent taste and judgment in photographers, knowledge of the fashion and style space and an expansive network in the industry.
A deep understanding of the established WSJ. Magazine visual and brand identity and a passion for building upon it.
Strong and highly polished communication skills both internally and externally, especially with publicists, booking directors, brand representatives, studios and production partners in arranging and executing high-level shoots on deadline.
A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas and to reach new audiences through visual content.
Knowledge of photo tools and programs, including Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media platforms.
The ability to be a self-starter who works well with larger teams.
