The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious and enterprising editor to serve as its Sports Editor. This job leads the Journal’s distinctive sports coverage, which has an authoritative voice, that breaks news, tells impactful stories and investigates all aspects of the sports world. WSJ Sports specializes in unexpected stories that speak to both hard-core fans and readers who don’t think of themselves as sports nuts. We are looking for an editor who can find new ways of looking at sports, whether it be for the casual fan, the diehard loyalists or the sports gambler.

Candidates should be experienced editors comfortable juggling breaking news on big games, as well as deeper enterprise reporting on the big issues animating sports fans all over the world.

You will:

Deliver ambitious enterprise stories that help the WSJ set an agenda on the leading sports stories of the day

Help reporters sharpen, elevate and execute their ideas

Encourage narrative forms of storytelling as well as data-driven story formats

Collaborate with colleagues on a range of topics as part of a fast-moving, 24-hour global newsroom

Lead the sports department, including managing reporters in the field

You have:

A broad knowledge of the sports world across all major leagues with demonstrated ability reporting and breaking stories

A track record of running teams of reporters and producing scoops and enterprise ahead of the competition

A demonstrated ability to tackle ambitious projects and find original approaches to coverage

Preferably, at least five years of editing experience, including at least some experience with sports stories

The position will be based in New York and reports to the Senior Editor, Features & WSJ Weekend.
