Kelly Kennedy, Managing Editor at The War Horse:
We, at The War Horse, are looking for story pitches from strong reporters about military/veteran issues written with a civilian audience in mind.
We're also looking for someone who can pitch a beat and hit us with three or four well-organized, beautifully written in our style with a nut graph, stories a year.
We pay between $1,000 to $1,500 a story.
I'm not looking for someone who simply wants to write for us.
I'm looking for someone who knows exactly whom they would interview, where they would go for a literature review, what questions they want to answer, and how to write up a piece that doesn't look like anything you'd turn in for a university or a contractor assignment.
By "strong writer," I don't mean you once stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. I mean you've had many pieces published by news organizations.
Also, please don't be intimidated by "military reporting." Our stories range from gender issues to battle history to politics. Think about how you can tell a story about a U.S. issue through the military or veterans. What interests you?
