The Washington Post is seeking an Afghanistan bureau chief to take responsibility for covering the legacy of America’s longest war in a country once again controlled by the Taliban. A primary coverage goal will be to reveal and illuminate how the Taliban is remaking Afghanistan. This is a challenging, high-profile assignment that requires the resilience needed to navigate a troubled country led by conservative leaders who have yet to gain broad international recognition.
The bureau chief will report from inside Afghanistan over long stretches of time, making frequent trips there, but will be based elsewhere in the region. While focusing primarily on Afghanistan, the bureau chief will sometimes cover stories in South and Central Asia, as well. The bureau chief will be responsible for coverage of Pakistan and work closely with Pakistani and Afghan journalists employed by The Post.
We have identified a strong internal candidate for this role but would welcome hearing from others interested in this role or others on The Post’s international staff.
