The Washington Post is seeking a Brazil-based correspondent for a six-month assignment that would begin in September. This could be an opportunity for an aspiring foreign correspondent to gain valuable experience or a chance for someone else to take on a temporary challenge. The Brazil-based correspondent is primarily responsible for coverage of Brazil but may also be enlisted for coverage elsewhere in South America, including Argentina and Chile. This is a challenging assignment that will begin at a pivotal time for Brazil, during a general election in which the incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro, is seeking a second term. In filling this role, we are seeking an accomplished journalist with a proven record of covering challenging assignments with authority and distinction. Any candidate must be sufficiently nimble and collaborative to pivot between fast, authoritative news coverage and deeper, high-impact reporting that unearths new facts and insight. The most qualified candidates will have previous experience as a foreign correspondent, ideally in Latin America. Proficiency in Portuguese would be highly advantageous; for those who do not speak Portuguese, proficiency in Spanish would be essential.
