The Washington Post seeks an agile, collaborative, multitalented editor to join our breaking news team in Seoul, which plays a critical role in The Post’s round-the-clock operations. A primary focus will be covering live news as it unfolds in the United States and around the globe during daytime hours in Seoul – overnight in Washington, D.C.
This is an important job, overseeing the work of high-performing reporters whose work must be integrated seamlessly with The Post’s breaking news operations around the globe and across the newsroom. As part of the newsroom’s 24-hour workflow, the Seoul-based breaking news editor will regularly take a turn as the designated point person for global coverage decisions. We are looking for broadly skilled editors who can handle breaking news as well as narrative stories and ideally have an eye for presentation and format.
The ideal candidates will be confident, knowledgeable leaders with a clear grasp of major storylines in the United States and across the Asia-Pacific region. Strong story radar, sound news judgment, digital savvy and the ability to lead with urgency, clarity and empathy are required. The editor should have at least five years of professional experience shaping news coverage at digital pace and should be prepared to become a leader in audience development tactics, from headline writing to platform targeting. Understanding analytics, social media and digital content distribution is also important.
We have identified a strong internal candidate for this position but welcome applications from others interested in this or similar positions on our international staff. This position will be based in Seoul and staffed through TWP South Korea LLC in South Korea, subject to local legal requirements. The person who fills this position will be required to work at least one weekend day, plus four additional days.
Those interested should upload a cover letter, résumé and three examples of outstanding coverage (as PDFs) to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 09/24/2023 will be prioritized. Your cover letter should be addressed to International Editor Douglas Jehl, Deputy International Editor Jennifer Amur, Seoul Hub Editor Kendra Nichols, Deputy Managing Editor Scott Vance and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
