The Washington Post is seeking an Asia-based correspondent to join a team of reporters dedicated to covering China at a time when the magnitude and importance of the beat is surpassed only by the challenges in covering it. This correspondent is primarily responsible for covering stories related to technology, business and the economy in China but will also share some responsibility for covering general news. The strict limits that China has imposed on journalists’ access to the country may mean that this coverage must be carried out from outside China’s borders. The assignment will require tenacity and initiative in overcoming this and other significant obstacles. In filling this role, we are seeking an accomplished journalist with a proven record of covering complicated stories with authority and distinction. The most qualified candidates will have previous experience covering technology, business and the economy, ideally in China or elsewhere in East Asia. Proficiency in Mandarin would be highly advantageous. Any candidate must be sufficiently nimble, collaborative and well-sourced to pivot between fast, authoritative news coverage and deeper, more ambitious, high-impact reporting that unearths new facts and insight.
