The Washington Post is looking for a graphics reporter to join an innovative and highly collaborative visuals team in the Climate & Environment Department. This reporter, who is part of a significant expansion of climate coverage at The Post, will pursue visually driven stories about climate science and impacts, environmental disparities and how society is being disrupted by – and adapting to – a warming planet. This journalist will develop graphics in quick response to news events and pursue medium- and long-term projects that explain how the planet is changing and scrutinize the records of powerful institutions. Candidates should demonstrate a strong command of dynamic visual storytelling through data analysis, mapping, satellite imagery, interactive visualizations and JavaScript coding libraries. They should feel comfortable collecting data, reporting and writing for quick turnaround visual stories. They will also be encouraged to pursue ambitious and innovative ideas and experiment with new forms of storytelling. This reporter will join a team of visual and data journalists embedded in the Climate & Environment Department working across formats and platforms. Often story ideas will emerge from collaborative discussions with colleagues, but we will strongly encourage this reporter to also propose their own ideas for both short and longer-term efforts. The best candidates will be skilled at juggling multiple stories, staying organized and communicating clearly with reporters and editors.
