The Washington Post is looking for an experienced and dynamic reporter to cover Congress, with a mandate to break news, unearth compelling enterprise pieces and anchor major stories on Capitol Hill. The ideal candidate must have a track record of covering a competitive beat with authority, developing sources, and writing with clarity and precision. We are seeking someone with a quick metabolism and broad expertise about the legislative process and politics generally. This assignment calls for a curious reporter with a keen instinct to land scoops and drive at sharp accountability targets, as well as a graceful writer who can weave historical sweep into coverage of congressional votes and other big moments. A team mindset is essential in this role. We expect this reporter to work cooperatively with colleagues covering Congress, the White House and other political beats, as well as with our newsletter writers. We are looking for a journalist who embraces innovative storytelling using photo, video, graphics, data and design to find fresh ways to explain the people and work of Congress to a broad audience with maximum impact. Flexibility is essential; this reporter must quickly adapt to breaking news and work nights and/or weekends when the congressional schedule demands it. This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
