The Washington Post is seeking an experienced and versatile journalist to join its America desk as a deputy editor overseeing coverage of race, multiculturalism and identity. This editor, who will report to the America editor, will manage a team of reporters writing about racial dynamics and rapid social change across the country as well as shepherd About US, a twice-weekly newsletter dedicated to 21st century conversations about race and identity. In addition, this editor will work with others on the America desk to deploy reporters and drive coverage of breaking national news, including natural disasters and other mass-casualty events, as well as the accountability journalism that flows from such incidents. The ideal candidate will have a successful track record of managing and mentoring reporters and juggling daily news dispatches with ambitious enterprise coverage. We are looking for someone with creative conceptual ideas and strong line-editing skills who can guide reporters in executing high-impact pieces while delivering crisp prose on deadline. This editor must be precise, make sound decisions and shape coverage of sensitive topics with authority, clarity, fairness and grace.
