The Washington Post is seeking an editor who can curate a daily editorial package that informs, enlightens and engages through smart curation and powerful presentations, pairing sharp headlines with stunning visuals and effective layouts to create maximum impact when promoting digital content on the homepage and the app. The homepage editor role requires a well-rounded journalist with strong news judgment, excellent headline-writing abilities and a keen sense of audience, SEO and design. Candidates must not only have a command of style and grammar but also understand how to write headlines for different platforms, including alerts, which the editor would help identify, write and send. While the ability to respond quickly to breaking news is a must, equally valuable is the skill to identify trending topics of high interest to audiences and provide counterprogramming with stories that offer a respite from the crush of breaking news. This candidate should be able to think mobile-first and have a strong understanding of mobile audience behaviors and needs, including how best to present content clearly in a limited space. Helping to determine story treatment and layout on The Post’s most influential platforms is a critical function of this role; design experience is a plus. We are seeking someone who can think quickly and creatively about how to deliver journalism to new audiences and support recirculation efforts. The editor must be a strong multitasker, keeping a close eye on analytics, social platforms and the competition. This position requires close work with newsroom departments, including photo, video, graphics and news design. Strong communication and collaboration skills are required. The ideal candidate also enjoys being part of a team. Candidates should have at least five years of journalism experience, preferably in a fast-paced digital environment and/or digital curation space, including but not limited to homepage, app and social media work.
