Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking a driven, experienced and innovative journalist to join our Supreme Court team in delivering insightful accountability and explanatory reporting, as well as urgent news, about the nation’s highest court at a crucial moment in its history.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished reporter and writer with a record of using sourcing and documents to deliver scoops, as well as a demonstrated ability to clearly explain complex topics to a broad audience and to dig into the political influences and pressures on major institutions.
Responsibilities:
While scrutinizing and illuminating the often-opaque work of the justices, on and off the bench, will be central to the role, this reporter will also cover daily news from the court. This includes arguments, rulings, nominations and other developments.
We also expect this reporter to write about significant news and trends in the federal judiciary generally.
Working collaboratively is a must: this position is one of two covering the Supreme Court at The Post. Both reporters frequently work with journalists on other teams from across the newsroom whose coverage areas intersect with the court.
Preferred qualifications:
A quick metabolism and competitive drive.
The ability to spot trends early and bring deep reporting, smart context and clear thinking to fast-developing stories.
Creativity and a commitment to innovative storytelling using photo, video, graphics, data and design to find fresh ways to cover the court and engage with readers.
Past experience covering the Supreme Court is useful but not required.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
Interested applicants should submit a résumé, a cover letter outlining their vision for the role, and three clips to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Jan. 28 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Justice and Immigration Editor Debbi Wilgoren, Deputy National Editor Amy Fiscus, National Editor Philip Rucker and Managing Editor Matea Gold.
