Reuters is seeking an exceptional editor to take up a new role in our Bangalore bureau, one focused as much on producing great journalists as producing great journalism. With an unlimited remit to work across the full expanse of Reuters’ largest global newsroom, the Editor at Large will work routinely with reporters and editors on some of the day’s top business and market stories, keeping the file humming and running smoothly. They will also provide the feedback, coaching and mentoring necessary to supercharge the career development of several hundred talented younger journalists across the bureau. Part news editor, part sub, sometimes a reporter, often a coach – whatever their role at any given moment, the Editor will be thinking about how to best use their skills and extensive expertise to make every journalist just a little bit better with every story they touch. The successful candidate will need to be a natural collaborator and teacher who thrives on variety. On a day of big news, you may be jumping in to lead-write or publish a front page story; other days you may be helping a young journalist conceptualize a story pitch. You could be embedded with a single small team for weeks, subbing stories and honing skills with a handful of reporters, or working across multiple topics in a single day, from earthquakes to refinery outages, company results to equity options. You will need to be ready to work at all levels of the bureau and with all levels of experience. You will need to know when to prioritize speed on a big story and when to pause for a teachable moment. In all cases you will need to work in seamless synchronicity with established newsroom leaders across the bureau.
