Senior Staff Editor, Democracy

New Posted 16 February 2022 | New York, NY | New York Times

Times Opinion is looking for an experienced editor to commission and edit guest essays, help oversee our America in Focus series, and write pieces and profiles as part of a new initiative exploring ideas and arguments about the future of democracy in the United States and the coming 2022 and 2024 elections. This editor would work in collaboration with the Politics editor, the Op-Ed editor, the deputy Opinion editor and other colleagues to develop coverage exploring the challenges and threats to democracy; the historical, political and financial dynamics that influence and destabilize democratic values; and the dangers facing classical liberal principles such as free and fair elections, free speech, voting rights and citizen-led democracy. This editor will be committed to executing coverage that reflects the ideological diversity, complexity and nuances of U.S. politics and the range of thought shaping democracy today. The strongest candidates will have experience writing and editing coverage of campaigns, candidates, voting and elections, as well as key subjects like polling, social media, technology, campaign finance and donors. The strongest candidate will have deep knowledge about both Republican and Democratic ideas, arguments and writers, and will be creative in commissioning and writing pieces that help readers understand the nature of conservatism and influence of Trumpism in America today. The political decisions made by American voters over the next three years will have consequential influence on our economic future, public health, civil discourse and free speech, global climate, human migration, income inequality, race relations and democracy, and we want the most sophisticated coverage that captures all of this.
