U.S. News empowers everyone to thrive. We are seeking a sharp sleep editor and mattress tester to empower consumers with the knowledge needed to make the best sleep-related decisions.
The sleep editor is responsible for writing and updating insightful, actionable articles about sleep, such as how to find the best mattress, the difference between foam and spring mattresses, how to figure out the right size bed, and when to find the best deals on mattresses. You’ll also review sleep/mattress articles and guides to ensure accuracy and demonstrate expertise to readers.
In addition, the sleep editor will work with our PR team to make television, radio and web appearances to promote and be the face of our mattress guides and sleep advice content. There could be opportunities for video, social media and YouTube creation as well.
Strong writing and communication skills are required, and a sleep or testing background is preferred. Occasional travel is required.
Are you up to the challenge?
Create and update sleep content that utilizes SEO and data analysis or newsletter and social headlines.
Continually optimize and update sleep and mattress pages to gain and maintain high search rank.
Collaborate with the SEO team to create content and testing plans and editorial and testing calendars.
Fact check and edit sleep content for flow, consistency, tone, audience, brevity and accuracy. You’ll also copy edit content for grammar, spelling, AP style,punctuation, keywords and formatting.
Research, report, and write long-form guides and short-form stories on sleep and mattresses.
Collaborate with editors and other stakeholders to create test plans, make pick recommendations, and move ideas from pitch to publish.
Visit mattress stores, and attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas.
Analyze competitive analysis, sleep data, survey data and quotes from our testers and distill into helpful shopping advice.
Work with the public relations and social teams to promote mattress ratings and create social videos.
Collaborate with the research team to upgrade and improve testing methods and data.
You should definitely have:
A minimum of three to five years’ of journalism experience, with a background in the sleep or testing space.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related degree or equivalent experience.
A love of sleep and helping consumers make smart choices.
Strong writing and communication skills.
Experience with AirTable or equivalent project management platforms, and working in a CMS.
Experience writing and editing for SEO.
Experience conducting competitor SERP analysis to help plan content strategy and updates.
Ability to manage your own project timelines and meet multiple deadlines.
The ability to multitask and work on tight deadlines in a fast-paced, digital environment.
It would be nice if you had:
Established relationships with sleep experts.
Prior experience writing about sleep topics.
Sleep certification.
Experience creating text for graphics and images.
An established presence on social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok.
Media training.

The base salary for this position is $60,000 to $85,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, interview performance, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
