K-12 Education Reporter

The Indianapolis Star/IndyStar.com, a winner of last year’s Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a reporter to lead our K-12 education coverage. The K-12 education reporter covers central Indiana’s largest suburban school districts as well as doing some statewide coverage, mostly on the Statehouse level – leading our K-12 education coverage. The emphasis is on equity, teachers and students, legal and political decisions around education and how education changes lives – for better and for worse. Through their work, this reporter holds officials accountable and shows the impact of their decisions, shines a spotlight on those previously overlooked and covers changes and shifts in culture and politics that are impacting education. Articles often take a solutions-driven approach and/or use various story formats and lengths, knowing that everything isn’t a 2,000-word story and that live-tweeting board meetings is a form of coverage. This reporter will also build relationships in the suburban communities they cover. In the suburbs, the focus is on nine of the area’s largest districts that are also closest to Indianapolis: Carmel Clay, Noblesville, Hamilton Southeastern, Westfield Washington, Zionsville, Avon, Brownsburg, Center Grove and Clark-Pleasant. On the statewide level, this reporter covers the Statehouse and keeps an eye to larger trends across Indiana. Because this beat is so expansive, there will be times when some stories can be delegated to other reporters. As the main reporter for statewide education issues, this reporter also works with the other K-12 reporters in the state to lead and coordinate statewide stories as needed.
