The Vineyard Gazette, an independent, award-winning media organization, is seeking applicants for a one-year news reporting fellowship on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, beginning in February 2024.
The successful fellow will gain experience in short- and long-form journalism, working in a fast-paced but collegial newsroom that puts a premium on thoughtful reporting, good writing and strong editing. The fellow will cover the nuts and bolts of local government, and will also have the opportunity to delve into broader social, economic and environmental issues, write feature stories and interview many of the extraordinary people who live on or regularly come to the Vineyard. Working year-round on Martha’s Vineyard offers a chance to be part of an intimate and diverse community in the off-season and enjoy a bustling summer season filled with cultural and literary events.
The fellowship is salaried, has excellent benefits and includes year-round housing.
A sense of adventure, resilience, evidence of curiosity about the world around you and writing talent, along with an interest in the workings of government and in social and environmental topics, are essential. News reporting experience and a demonstrated ability to dig beneath the surface of issues are strongly preferred. This is an opportunity to develop in-depth reporting and writing skills and build a solid body of work while living in a unique setting. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and a car.
