The Content Writer, develops, writes, and collaborates to create a wide range of content to drive principal-level fundraising goals for the university in support of Virginia Tech’s major strategic priorities. The ideal candidate is an expert writer, versed in the skill of creating imaginative language, marketing concepts and ideas that may not yet exist. We’re looking for someone who can generate ideas, and synthesize concepts to create compelling, persuasive language. This writing will take shape on websites, in proposals, pitch decks, and other print and digital materials .
Candidates for the position will be required to submit a portfolio of five work samples produced within the past five years. These samples must be provided along with the initial application materials. Finalists for the position will be required to complete a writing exercise.
Author and co-create compelling communication materials that appeal to both PG-level donors and principal corporate partners. Author stewardship materials, case studies, fundraising proposals, cases for support, or presentations to foundations, corporations, and individuals with capacity to give $5M or more.
Research strategic university initiatives and areas ripe for partnerships and/or donor support to articulate areas of support and possible impact.
Capture, shape, and synthesize information, statistics, and other supporting materials to enhance persuasive writing to inspire giving to strategic initiatives at Virginia Tech.
Interview senior leaders, faculty, researchers, students, other members of the university community, and external stakeholders or experts to create fundraising materials.
Translate highly technical information and academic jargon into clear, compelling, and grammatically correct content accessible to a wide variety of target audiences.
Write, edit, copy edit, and proofread proposals or other materials in support of fundraising objectives.
Collaborate with graphic designers, project managers, fundraisers, and other colleagues to produce content and leverage earned, owned, or paid media channels in support of fundraising objectives.
Integrate visuals and statistics with words through print pieces, as well as dynamic websites, blogging, vlogging, and other electronic materials, in support of strategic fundraising objectives.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent level of training experience.
Demonstrated experience in the communications, marketing, or creative field(s).
Experience in a collaborative, team environment.
Equal strength in both print and digital design.
Strong portfolio of design projects, including web content and other visual materials.
Strong experience working in Adobe Creative Suite programs, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and video creation software programs, such as premier or after effects.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree in a related field to the position.
Experience with federal, corporate, or foundations grant writing within the higher education sector or nonprofit preferred.
Experience with fundraising writing for higher education.
Demonstrated record of producing successful fundraising proposals.
