This crucial position is responsible for shaping all elements of the Washington Examiner's coverage in the early hours of the morning when readers are waking up and getting their news for the day. Responsibilities for this position include writing breaking news stories, copy editing stories and newsletters (both news and opinion); utilizing newsroom CMS to best present articles, including the addition of graphics, picture, video and meta tags; managing breaking news alerts across multiple platforms; running our social media channels overnight and running and curating the homepage. Given the nature of the shift, applicants are strongly encouraged to be self-starters who are comfortable working in a remote setting often by themselves. The work week is Sunday-Thursday and the hours are approximately 11pm to 7am (Eastern time) although this may be subject to change depending on the applicant. Applicants will be expected to complete a copy-editing exam.
Qualifications
Proven experience in news editing and writing
Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Up to date with latest and best SEO practices
Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing news cycles
Strong knowledge of politics and current events
Keen attention to detail
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field
Experience with content management systems and social media platforms
Experience in a digital newsroom is a plus
