The Managing Editor, Digital is responsible for creating and managing compelling news and feature content for WFYI’s digital platforms and other news products. This position will work closely with the Director, News, and the editorial team to set digital news initiatives to serve a larger, more diverse audience. They will also execute advanced digital tactics and lead a team of content producers and journalists to create digital content complementary to both web and broadcast news. This mission-critical role will help both WFYI and WBAA extend our reach and impact local, statewide, regional, and national policy equity reporting.
WFYI and WBAA are two of Indiana's leading non-commercial media outlets and share one newsroom. That newsroom is the home of notable, award-winning local, statewide, regional, and national journalism and community engagement initiatives. It provides news to all audiences, without a paywall, and it partners and shares content with other publications – including all public media newsrooms in Indiana, the Indianapolis Recorder, the Associate Press, the Indianapolis Business Journal and ChalkBeat Indiana.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage WFYI’s digital team, including a digital producer, a data reporter and future team members.
Lead all WFYI, WBAA and Side Effects Public Media (our regional health reporting collaboration) web and social media news experiences.
Follow digital journalism trends and develop capacity for new digital products and projects and create training opportunities to build the newsroom’s digital skills.
Work daily with the editorial team to develop breaking news and in-depth coverage plans, newsroom goals and audience impact strategies.
Collaborate with and support Indiana's statewide news team and collaboration, Indiana Public Broadcasting.
Collaborate across station departments so news plans dovetail, support and complement station goals.
As a team leader, conduct oneself with sensitivity toward building strong relationships within the team and across departments.
Demonstrated proficiency in all facets of online content production, including writing and AP Style, working with content management systems, audio and video production, and photography and photo editing.
Work with the editorial team to provide weekend, night and holiday news coverage as needed.
Work as requested with the News Director to ensure budgets, deliverables, and funder reports are timely and accurate, and to contribute language and ideas for promotional and fundraising efforts.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
A minimum of five years’ experience in progressively responsible journalistic or editorial leadership roles, including experience editing and producing daily and in-depth multiplatform journalism.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred otherwise equivalent work experience is acceptable.
Advanced experience with social media platforms.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Required:
Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under deadline pressure.
Demonstrated proficiency in all facets of online content production, including writing and AP Style, audio and video production, and photography and photo editing.
Knowledge of SEO principles and best practices.
Previous work applying social and web analytics data for decision-making and audience growth.
Strong journalism experience.
Ability to excel in a collaborative team environment with a high level of personal motivation.
Ability to work simultaneously on short and long-term projects.
Preferred:
Experience in policy reporting.
Previous work in both broadcast and digital news reporting.
Experience coaching and leading journalists.
Familiar with community engagement journalism.
Previous work in journalism collaborations.
