Community Editor

New Posted 1 March 2024 | Boston, MA | GBH

GBH news journalists are not voyeurs but participants in the greater Boston community. We are citizens of the region and guided by a foundation-wide DEIA (diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility) framework that centers on treating our colleagues and the communities we serve with dignity and respect, even when telling the most complex stories. We are thoughtful stewards of public trust, and also seek to foster that same trust in our own newsroom. We aim to be good neighbors and colleagues and do no harm, and rebuild trust when harm has been done. Equitable, collaborative, responsible journalism is at the core of all we do.

A core staple of our local journalism is listening and collaboration, and we constantly have our ears to the ground in our local neighborhoods and networks throughout our region. We are deeply devoted to listening and understanding — to the community and also to each other on staff — paying close attention to historically underserved, under-included and overlooked populations inside of our newsroom and in the community. We show up. Not just for the story or assignment, but for everything before, after and in between.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We're looking for an enterprising and collaborative Editor to deepen our engagement with communities across the Commonwealth. You care deeply about data, impact, crowd-sourcing and engaging new audiences. You have a proven track record of engaging communities of color and other marginalized groups. You have a knack for zeroing in on solutions and innovative approaches to solving systemic problems that disproportionately leave some people behind.

Formulate and oversee a comprehensive newsroom-wide strategy for engaging the public in meaningful discussions surrounding critical stories and issues, encompassing both problem identification and solution exploration
Take the lead in editing and producing impactful, distinctive content across various platforms, including web, radio, and social media, with a focus on amplifying community voices.
Host and facilitate listening sessions across the Commonwealth in close collaboration with GBH News journalists and community partners
Utilize data analysis to identify communities across the Commonwealth that face disproportionate equity and opportunity gaps
Develop and implement effective strategies to engage marginalized groups in our journalism
Build and nurture a network of reliable and diverse sources to enhance the breadth and depth of coverage
Maintain active involvement in non-GBH community events to establish new relationships and generate fresh story ideas

In this role, your expertise as an expert convener and organizer, coupled with your strong editorial skills, will be crucial in guiding our newsroom's public engagement strategy and producing content that resonates with the community, particularly those whose voices are often overlooked. Your cultural consciousness, empathy, and emotional intelligence will serve as valuable assets in this endeavor.
