Managing Editor

Wick Communications is looking for a managing editor to lead two local news publications in South Dakota. In this position you’ll oversee all newsgathering for The Capital Journal in Pierre and The Daily Leader in Madison. Both are pillars of their communities, with roots dating back to the 1880s.

Today they have growing digital audiences and connect with readers through email newsletters, social media, mobile apps and regular print publications.

Successful candidates will have a history of producing quality journalism in both print and digital.

We’re looking for someone living in, or willing to relocate to, commuting distance of either Pierre or Madison (Sioux Falls.) This position will come with regular company-covered travel between the two.

Duties:

Oversee the two newsrooms (combined staff of eight)

Coach and develop reporters

Coordinate and edit daily news coverage online and in print

Build community engagement through regular outreach and events

Occasional writing as needed, particularly for breaking or major news

Qualifications:

Excellent editing skills

5+ years journalism experience

Experience leading a news team

Social media management, newsletter writing or multimedia editing are pluses

Living in, or willing to relocate to, commuting distance of either Pierre or Madison (Sioux Falls)

This is a full-time, salaried position with full benefits, including medical and vision insurance, and a 401k retirement plan. We are an equal opportunity employer. The expected salary range for this position is $62,000 to $70,000.
