WRAL is seeking an experienced, energetic and resourceful reporter to cover state government stories on a daily basis. This journalist will report on-air and for our digital platforms, depending on experience. While the focus will be on reporting timely and topical subjects, opportunities for more enterprise and contextual stories that delve deep into the hows and whys of developments in the North Carolina General Assembly are possible.
Top candidates will preferably have direct experience covering the Tar Heel State’s legislature for a newspaper, wire service or broadcast outlet. We would also consider candidates with experience covering government and politics in other states. Familiarity covering federal, state or local courts would also be a plus.
The following characteristics and qualifications are essential: unquenchable curiosity and a strong sense of fairness; outstanding contacts in North Carolina’s state government or an ability to source up quickly and continually develop new contacts; refined interviewing skills; superb storytelling abilities; a good feel for visuals; and the capability to deliver clean copy following AP style. Experience filing public records requests and reviewing databases is also preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with three years of previous experience reporting in local news and a four-year college degree.
Please include five writing samples along with your résumé in your application.
