Assignment Editor

WTKR/WGNT, The E.W. Scripps station in Norfolk, Virginia is looking for a news lover to join our team as an Assignment Editor. The Assignment Editor must have a take-charge attitude, as this individual will be responsible for managing newsroom assignments, coordinating logistics and monitoring emails and scanners. The ideal candidate has excellent news judgement and will maintain a strong sense of urgency within the newsroom. The Assignment Editor will play a key role to further our station’s mission to tell stories that are important to the people who live, work and play in Coastal Virginia and Northeast North Carolina. WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Work with the leadership team to manage daily news content and special event logistics

Manage newsroom assignments, coordinate logistics, monitor news wires and scanners

Dispatch crews to stories and breaking news, using appropriate logistical and journalistic judgement

Make calls to news sources to confirm information and distribute confirmed information to news staff for reporting

Assist in finding stories, doing research and tracking story ideas consistent with the station’s content strategy

Write copy and edit scripts for broadcast or digital platforms; share ideas about how to present our content in a visually compelling way; publish online content.

Perform other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

BS/BA in related discipline or equivalent years of experience

1-2 years of experience in newsroom environment or related field preferred

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

Must be organized, self-starter who can work independently

Basic computer skills; non-linear and production techniques

Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks in a deadline driven environment

Understanding of the principles of responsible journalism; knowledge and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel law

Ability to work well with others in a team-based environment

Ability to write effectively

May require weekend evening and weekend work
