WVIA is the PBS and NPR affiliate serving over 22 counties in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. What is the role?

This is a brand new full-time opportunity reporting to the News Director. The Digital News Editor is responsible for overseeing the digital content production and publication for WVIA News. This role ensures that news articles are accurate, engaging, and optimized for online platforms. The Digital News Editor plays a key role in shaping the digital presence of WVIA News and ensures that content aligns with the organization's editorial standards and audience expectations.

What The Role Involves

Content Oversight:- Edit and review news articles, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to editorial guidelines.- Manage the news content calendar and coordinate with reporters and contributors to ensure timely delivery of news stories.- Make editorial decisions regarding story selection, headlines, and multimedia content.- Take point on pitching stories to Apple News, NPR National, and local media outlets
Digital Optimization:- Optimize news content for digital platforms, considering factors such as SEO, social media sharing, and user engagement.- Collaborate with the digital team to implement strategies for increasing online visibility and audience reach.
Quality Control:- Implement quality control measures to uphold the highest editorial standards for accuracy, fairness, and journalistic integrity.- Provide constructive feedback to writers and reporters to enhance their skills and maintain a consistent level of excellence in content production.
Multimedia Integration:- Work with multimedia producers to integrate visual elements, such as images, videos, and interactive graphics, to enhance news stories.- Stay informed about multimedia storytelling trends and implement innovative approaches to engage digital audiences.
Audience Engagement:- In collaboration with Marketing team, monitor audience feedback and analytics to understand reader preferences and optimize content accordingly.- Collaborate with the social media team to promote news content effectively on various digital platforms.- Coordinate with other departments, such as marketing and content, to align digital content with organizational goals and keep news content fresh on all designated modules.

Our Ideal Candidate Has The Following

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field required
At least 5 years of experience as a news editor, preferably in a digital news environment
Strong knowledge of backend CMS systems, including drafting, editing, formatting, publishing, and distributing of news content
Strong knowledge of SEO frameworks, best practices, and implementation, including internal and back links
Ability to design and publish e-newsletters on a regular basis
Ability to publish video to digital platforms, such as Youtube, social media, and WVIA owned platforms
Strong editing and writing skills with a keen eye for detail
Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and content management systems
Leadership and team management experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced news environment with tight deadlines
Understanding of legal and ethical considerations in journalism

The working conditions for the role include, but are not limited to:

Employee is regularly required to use a computer for extended periods of time and must be able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
The employee is required to frequently sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Travel in WVIA viewing area is required.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.
