  • Dark Paint and Roofs: Impact on Home Temperature
Aidan explains, "Dark colors absorb heat, potentially warming homes, while lighter shades reflect it." In cold climates, dark roofs can reduce heating costs, whereas light roofs help in hot climates. Insulation, window shades, and foliage can mitigate heat absorption. Solar panels are recommended for energy efficiency. Consider climate when choosing paint colors to optimize home temperature and energy bills.
  • Harnessing Sunlight: The Basics of Passive Solar Design
Aidan explains passive solar as using sunlight to heat and light homes without mechanical systems. Key elements include solar orientation, thermal mass, insulation, glazing, and shading. Types are direct, indirect, and isolated gain. Aidan says, "It's a smart way to naturally make our homes more energy smart," highlighting design's role in efficiency.
  • Maryland's Energy Act: Renewables vs. Fossil Fuels Debate
Aidan argues that natural gas should not be confused with renewables, stating, "Gas is not a renewable energy source." He champions solar energy for its climate benefits and job creation. Maryland's 50% renewable energy goal by 2030 is praised, but Aidan insists, "The only energy that offers us energy independence is renewable energy."

  • This is a complete win-win situation. The renewable energy sector is growing rapidly, creating millions of new jobs, driving profits. It also happens to mitigate the climate crisis, doesn’t pollute so it’s better for human health and it ensures that nations that invest in clean energy support national security too. Because it frees them from their dependency on fossil fuel imports and market fluctuations in oil prices. It is a game-changer.
