Dr. Ainel B. Sewell is a specialist in Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.
The Willowbrook hospital began using contrast-enhanced mammography in January 2020 and was the first to do so in the Houston Methodist system.
The experience prompted Collins to encourage her mother Joanne Matava, 89, to get a mammogram as well.
Seven years after changing their recommendation for women to begin breast cancer screening at their own discretion at some point in their 50s, the United States Preventive Services Task Force has revised their rule.
“The subtle message that they sent to women throughout the United States was: ‘Mammograms don’t really matter, and you can skip if you like.’ And that has had disastrous consequences.”
“Basically, all of this tissue looks like white snow and among that snow I am looking for a white bunny and it is exceedingly hard to look for that white bunny in a snow field."
“We have people frequently who never know that they actually are claustrophobic and then they get on that MRI machine, in that very small tube, and they feel they cannot handle the anxiety of being enclosed. So, this exam, it’s such a great tool to have in our arsenal to detect cancer.”
