Amir Salihefendić is the Founder and CEO at Doist, a pioneer of remote work that specializes in productivity software. He is the creator of Todoist, an award-winning task management app, and Twist, the first communication app designed for async work. Doist supports 40 million people in 19 languages worldwide. Amir is an expert on remote work and advocate for async communication to stay focused and productive, earning him global recognition as one of the Top 50 Remote Enablers in the 2024 Remote Influencer Report.

Before founding Doist, he was part of the founding team behind Plurk, a popular social networking site in Asia. Amir developed Todoist in 2007 while in university to solve a problem for himself. At the time, it was one of the very first digital task managers available.

Over the past 17 years, Amir has grown Doist from two people in two countries to 100 full-time employees in 35 countries — all working remotely. Without VC funding, Doist has achieved over $40 million in annual revenue and has tens of millions of users worldwide.

  • What is very difficult as a founder is that you need to constantly learn, evolve, and grow as a company grows. The most common trait amongst the most successful founders is the ability to learn.

  • We lean toward the strengths of Doist by focusing on our execution. Our bootstrapped model is fantastic, especially since the VC model only makes sense when money is “extremely cheap”. E.g., the VC-backed companies did not need to create any sustainable business — just growth and they did this by burning a ton of money. In a market with high-interest rates, these companies are in real trouble, because they bought their way to growth.
