Amy is the Owner and Principal Designer at Amy Straub Design, which she started in 2018. ASD specializes in the design and installation of custom storage spaces, primarily in residential homes in Northern New Jersey. Born out of an interest in helping people maximize space to improve everyday living, and capitalizing on her earlier career designing in the Washington, DC market, Amy is responsible for both the design work and the execution/installation of her custom designs.
In honor of Women's Entrepreneurship Day, we caught up with three women who built businesses and thrived in the traditionally male-dominated world of construction.
Teaching DIY skills to girls can help them build confidence and self-reliance, and introduce them to traditionally male-dominated careers.
“Girls are strong, capable problem-solvers,” Straub says. “Yet, when it comes to tools, building and repair, they have traditionally been left out of that space.”
By fostering a basic understanding of tools and building in a young girl, Straub says “we instill confidence, self-reliance, curiosity, and creativity.” And those traits will serve her in virtually every aspect of her life, whether it’s education, employment, relationships or friendships.
For a woman starting out in the construction industry, it is easy to feel as though you do not belong. But we do. Women bring a unique point of view and approach to problem solving to construction projects large and small. When faced with challenges, we don’t panic and throw our hands up in despair; we pivot and drive towards creative solutions.
In my career as an expert space planner and designer, I always felt like something was missing — I loved the creation, but ached to be a part of the hands-on execution of my designs. So I dove in and created a business model that allows me to be involved from conception to execution of my projects.
