With more than 15 years of experience in the wealth management industry, Carla founded Ametrine Wealth with the vision of helping people–particularly women–take control of their financial futures. She prides herself on creating a compassionate, trusting environment for clients and removing the barriers that keep people from setting and achieving their financial goals. Carla’s clients value her financial planning insight, ability to break down complex topics, attention to detail, and approachable demeanor.

Originally from Massachusetts, Carla initially envisioned a career in science. She graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University and received a Masters in chemistry from Northwestern University. However, long hours in the lab made her realize her preference for engaging with people over compounds, and she decided to put her analytical skills to use in the financial sector. Carla holds an MBA in Finance and General Management from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and is a Certified Financial Planner PractitionerTM.

Carla lives in Lake Orion with her husband, Jarod, and her two greatest accomplishments, daughters Brinley and Chloe.

  • Strategies to Minimize Taxes on Retirement Withdrawals
Carla explains that early withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts are taxed as ordinary income, with penalties. However, strategies like Substantially Equal Periodic Payments (SEPP) and the Rule of 55 can help avoid penalties. "Partial Roth conversions before age 73 can lower future tax burdens." Roth IRAs offer tax-free withdrawals, benefiting both retirees and their heirs.
  • Retirees Beware: Risky Investments to Avoid for Financial Security
Carla advises retirees to avoid speculative investments like crypto and gold, which "have no underlying value." She warns against private equity and hedge funds due to "very high fees" and liquidity issues. These investments can be lucrative for fund managers but risky for retirees, who need stable, accessible funds.
  • Gender Wage Gap and Caretaking Roles Heighten Women's Financial Stress
Carla highlights that women earn less due to the gender wage gap and caretaking roles, leading to greater financial stress. "Women have fewer resources to turn to for financial advice," she notes, emphasizing societal expectations that limit financial education. These factors, combined with longer life expectancies, contribute to heightened financial pressures and stress levels.

“While the cost of raising kids is huge, the impact can actually be positive for many people when it comes to their financial situation and building their net worth as it creates a huge need to come up with a financial plan and to define and save for goals,” Carla Adams, founder of Ametrine Wealth, said in an email.

"Tune out the noise – everyone’s social media posts of all the luxurious things they seem to be doing that appear to make them happy – and focus within yourself about what you really want out of life," Adams says.

“I think the biggest barrier for most people is that they need to fix their mindset,” said Carla Adams, CFP, founder and financial advisor at Ametrine Wealth.

“I’ve worked as a financial advisor for over 15 years and many of my millionaire clients have fairly ordinary salaries, but they are frugal, they save and they invest,” she said.

“It’s important for every advisor to know their niche — what types of clients they most enjoy working with and what types of clients they have the experience and expertise to best serve,” Adams says. “You can’t be everything to everybody.”
