As VP of Winemaking for Scheid Family Wines, Dave Nagengast is the creative and organizational mastermind behind the company’s full portfolio of wines. Dave and his team set the vinous style and direction for each wine, from selecting the vineyards that go into each brand, to drawing on their winemaking acumen to bring each wine to fruition.

Dave joined Scheid Family Wines in 2002 as Consulting Winemaker, in 2006 he was promoted to Director of Winemaking, and in 2018 he became Vice President of Winemaking. As lead winemaker, Dave says, “I believe my job is to take care of the beautiful fruit that is harvested from our estate vineyards and allow it to reach its full potential in the winery. I want our wines to offer pure varietal flavor and reflect the regional character of Monterey and the terroir of our vineyards.” Prior to joining Scheid, Dave held winemaking positions at Storrs Winery, Mirassou Vineyards and San Martin Winery.

Dave is an early adopter of sustainable farming and winemaking practices and also an innovator in both the vineyard and cellar. Blending the best of traditional, artisan winemaking technique with modern technology, has resulted in numerous awards including 90+ scores, Best of Show, Best of Class and an abundance of gold medals.

Dave holds a B.S. degree in Agriculture Science with an emphasis in Enology from California State University, Fresno, where he was also a discus thrower.
