Ghana-based health policy consultant Desmond Jumbam launched the Global Surgical Advocacy Fellowship in 2011. Modeled after the AGIG New Voices Program, the fellowship focuses on surgical advocates through Operation Smile, giving young medical professionals long-term opportunities to expand and enhance their global exposure to research, advocacy, and on-ground programmatic global surgery initiatives in low and middle-income countries. With guidance from the New Voices team, Desmond’s process of multiplying surgical fellowships is successfully multiplying the number of surgeons who not only provide quality care, but who also support growth of the fellowship network globally. 2023 also marks the 10th year the New Voices Program has provided tools and leadership resources so people like Desmond can continue their great work across the globe.
