Dr. Andrew Spieler is a Robert F. Dall Distinguished Professor in Business and Professor of Finance at Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University. He received a B.A. in mathematics, a B.S. in economics and an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance from the State University of New York at Binghamton; an M.S. in finance from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in finance from the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and Chartered Alternative Investments Analyst (CAIA) designations. Dr. Spieler was previously awarded "Distinguished Teacher of the Year" and "Researcher of the Year" in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.
Prior to joining Hofstra University, Dr. Spieler taught full-time in the undergraduate, M.B.A. and Executive M.B.A. programs at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He also received a Dissertation Year Fellowship and research grant from the Binghamton Foundation.
Dr. Spieler's primary research interests include corporate governance, shareholder activism and real estate. He published papers in Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance, Journal of Real Estate Portfolio Management, Urban Studies, Journal of Applied Finance and Journal of Housing Research. He was awarded Best Paper in "Real Estate Valuation" and Best Paper in "REITs" from the American Real Estate Society. Dr. Spieler has had papers accepted for presentation at the Financial Management Association, Southern Finance Association, European Financial Management Association, American Real Estate Society, European Real Estate Society, Asian Real Estate Society, Hong Kong University-National University of Singapore Symposium on Real Estate Research, Western Economic Association, American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association and Weimer School of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and Land Economics Dr. Spieler has served as an ad hoc reviewer for Financial Management, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics and Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance as well as on the program committee for the Eastern Finance Association, Southern Finance Association and European Real Estate Society. Dr. Spieler has been interviewed and quoted by local news and print media. He has successfully completed five actuary exams administered jointly by the CAS and SOA and was the former research director for the IRAA, a shareholder advocacy group.
