Dr. Mark Modera's more than 40 years of experience in innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and regulatory environments make him an excellent source on energy efficiency, as well as commercial heating, ventilation, and cooling trends.
Dr. Modera is the Associate Director of the UC-Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) and a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC-Davis. He invented and commercialized the Aeroseal duct sealing technology and currently serves as Aeroseal's Scientific Advisor.
He began his career at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and was a vice president with Carrier Corporation. He currently holds several patents based on research spanning energy efficiency, energy performance, HVAC, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and aerosols.
“Even before COVID-19, we were spending 90 percent of our time indoors. Indoor air quality is an even more important issue today. Air is not something you can see or easily clean, like your hands, a doorknob, or a table. ”
“Small HVAC duct leaks are a big deal. Sealing them can reduce global carbon emissions from buildings by 1 gigaton annually. And in the process, our world's buildings will be more comfortable and have healthier air."
As much as 30% of the air circulating through heating and cooling ducts is lost through leaks, holes and poor connections
A study released by Aeroseal LLC found the pandemic has made IAQ an increasing focus of home improvement projects.
Scientists stress the importance of proper building ventilation in preventing the spread of COVID-19, rating it as important as social distancing, wearing masks, and washing hands regularly.
