Heather was born and raised in New York City. She attended the University of Southern California for college, medical school and general surgery residency, and is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. During general surgery residency, Heather spent 2 years in Boston. In the first year she earned a Masters in Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She spent the second year as a Harvard Medical School research fellow at Boston Children's Hospital in the Department of Plastic Surgery. Heather then attended plastic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. She completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, specializing in reconstructive and aesthetic (cosmetic) breast surgery.
