Heather Vough is an expert on how professionals construct their identities according to their careers, professions, organizations, and workgroups. Her research centers on employee sensemaking of events and setbacks at work, as well as sensemaking, narratives, meaning of work, and career transitions. Her recent focus has been on the side effects of daily work intrusions, self-verification in the face of role-based image discrepancies, and identity threats in employee responses to observed supervisor incivility.
Taking on “side hustles”—second jobs to make money alongside one’s main job—was a growing trend before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the labor market. Since then, data shows that the unstable economy has led more workers to hold multiple jobs.
