  • “We have yet to hear about any positive impacts of continuous glucose monitoring outside of the management of diabetes, and I think they cause more harm than good.” It could lead to oversimplifying nutrition, increased stress and anxiety around food, and unnecessary restriction or inaccurate and inadequate advice around what to do with that information,” she says. “My recommendation is usually not to do it. Even for clients I work with that have diabetes, it leads to them feeling anxious when they see their glucose spike.” She’s also broadly unconvinced by the usefulness of the data provided, especially the difficulty in parsing what specifically might have elevated glucose levels when eating different foods.

  • "Katherine Metzelaar, a dietitian and certified intuitive eating counselor and founder of Bravespace Nutrition, says she's observed a similar phenomenon in her practice. "Most adults cannot recognize when they have an ED because so many of the behaviors are normalized in our dieting and wellness culture," she says. "Many adults I work with don't think they have an ED coming in, and realize after some time that actually, they meet criteria for an ED." That's why, she says, "It's essential to consider the life stage someone is in and how long they've been in the ED because that is all important in the recovery process. Many people that I work with have been stuck in disordered eating or the ED for their whole life."

"Fat burning pills are marketed as supplements to help promote weight loss and fat loss. These products often claim to work through several mechanisms, including blocking the absorption of fat, increasing the frequency of stool or urine output and reducing hunger cues, according to Katherine Metzelaar, a registered dietitian, certified intuitive eating counselor and founder of Bravespace Nutrition, an eating disorder nutrition therapy clinic in Seattle.

Many weight loss supplements also claim to work by:

    Speeding up metabolism
    Increasing fat breakdown
    Increasing feelings of fullness
    Reducing cravings
Blocking lipogenesis, or the formation of new fat cells
Slowing the emptying of the stomach
Altering the metabolism of fat and other nutrients
Keep in mind that weight loss medications and fat burning pills are vastly different. Fat burning pills and other “quick-fix” weight loss supplements are typically sold over the counter and are not regulated in the same way as weight loss medications. Unlike fat burning pills, weight loss medications require a prescription from a healthcare professional and have been studied extensively for their ability to promote weight management when combined with diet and lifestyle changes."
