Laura Hendricks, Co-founder of Luminaries, is a wife, mother of three, and a survivor of acute myeloid leukemia. After beating this aggressive form of blood cancer in 2018, Laura discovered that survivorship was challenging and lonely. Instead of feeling joy and relief, Laura felt confusion, fear, loneliness, and paralyzation, unsure how to rebuild her life after cancer. Because of this, Laura felt she needed to move forward in a way that allowed her to tell her story and support others in survivorship who felt the same as she did. Along with her husband, Brock, she built Luminaries, a survivorship program focused on supporting cancer survivors with wellness kits delivered to their doorstep.
Laura’s background in sales, sales strategy within the advertising space, and focus on data and technology have helped her create her non-profit organization and nourished her ability to build relationships with others. Laura is a self-proclaimed connector of people and situations, and her authentic approach to running Luminaries has made the organization what it is today.
Laura and Brock built a survivorship program to “break the mold” on survivorship and deliver wellness kits to survivors’ homes, so they can feel supported and have access to science-backed world-class care in the comfort of their own homes. Laura’s desire to give back and show kindness to the less fortunate is the driving force behind Luminaries. She hopes that her organization can raise awareness for cancer survivors' challenges in the after and encourage the healthcare system to acknowledge survivorship as another stage of cancer treatment.
Laura Hendricks brought her kids to the doctor because they were sick — and a comment from their pediatrician led to her own diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia
Laura Hendricks found out that she had acute myeloid leukaemia after a visit to her kid's paediatrician, who noticed that there was something wrong with her instead of her children
A mother of three learned she had acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after her children’s eagle-eyed pediatrician noticed discoloration on her skin. Tests further confirmed the cancer diagnosis.
Hendricks says Luminaries provides people with support after cancer that many just do not have.
“I’m so grateful every day for the chance I was given to still be here, to be a mom, to be a sister, to be a wife, to be a daughter, to be a friend,” she says. “I know how hard my survivorship journey was with those advantages. All I want to do is make survivorship easier for other people.”
“Everyone should have access to a world-class, science-backed program that helps guide you in survivorship in the same way you are guided during treatment,” Hendricks says. “One of the hardest things in survivorship is how do you get up every day and take the next step forward on your own?”
“I had that mentality that I was going to be a survivor,” she says. “What rooted me to survival … was my children and my husband and my family. Truly, I wanted to be their mom for the rest of their lives.”
After her stem cell transplant, Hendricks went into remission and has been cancer free for the past five years.
“I’m one of the lucky ones,” she says. “I have not relapsed.”
