Neil is Vice President of Developer Ecosystems at NVIDIA where he helps enable applications to take advantage of advanced GPU and silicon acceleration.
Neil is also the elected President of the Khronos Group, where he initiated the OpenGL ES standard now used by billions worldwide every day, helped catalyze the WebGL project to bring interactive 3D graphics to the Web, fostered the creation of the glTF standard for 3D assets, chairs the OpenCL working group defining the open standard for heterogeneous parallel computation, and helped establish and launch the new-generation Vulkan API.
Additionally, Neil serves as the Chair of the Metaverse Standards Forum, providing a venue for cooperation between standards organizations and companies to foster the development of interoperability standards for an open and inclusive metaverse, and accelerate their development and deployment through pragmatic, action-based projects. Under his leadership, the Metaverse Standards Forum brought together nearly 2,500 leading companies and standards organizations in just a few months.
A MetaBeat panel discussed the technical standards and building blocks of the metaverse, using the building of the internet as an example.
"What we have right now is potential. At its most basic, the metaverse is a combination of the Web’s connectivity and the immersiveness of spatial computing: interactivity + convincing physical reality. The combination of those two characteristics leads to a lot of different potential applications: accurate physical simulations and effective remote social interactions; universal digital twins for product design, testing, manufacture, marketing, and sales; practical AR optics guiding people through tasks and spaces; IOT sensor networks; and more, including plenty of technologies no one has thought of yet. So while yes, the metaverse could be “a place to immerse yourself in any digital surrounding, and participate in any physical reality, at any time, ” it could also be so much more than a consumer playground. It could be a whole new system for documenting, designing, and moving through the world."
"What is the metaverse and why does anyone care whether or not it’s “open and inclusive”? Here’s what the NFT influencers selling you tracts of metaverse land for your digital ape won’t admit: we don’t yet know what the metaverse is going to be."
"The metaverse will bring together diverse technologies, requiring a constellation of interoperability standards, created and maintained by many standards organizations."
