…Swearing by this statement means that you’re forgetting about the fifth wall—the ceiling! “It’s prime real estate for creativity,” Noel Gatts, HGTV designer and cohost and founder of beam & bloom, says. “With such a magical expanse above our heads, there is endless opportunity to draw the eye up in subtle and striking ways.”
Integrate Pattern and Tone
“How you utilize the design opportunity of stair runners depends entirely on your personal style. When an adventurous homeowner knows they’ll be living in their space for years to come, things can get exciting and a stairwell can become a stunning focal point and an expansive climbing art piece.
“Stairs with dark wood treads pair well with cool grays and vibrant blues that remain refined and elegant. If you’re a bolder type, mixed colors and vibrant patterns really stand out against a dark wood backdrop. Mid-level neutral wood floors stay refined with warm woven stair runners in sisal. Very light wood stairs can be either dramatic with high-contrast colors or soft and soothing with coordinating neutrals in various depths. Ensuring some variety in pattern and tone keeps dirt and wear from being too obvious with everyday use.”
